Straight from the world cup, we go into the transfer season and it is no surprise that several world cup stars have been scouted and transferred. This has been one of the craziest transfer windows ever, with hundreds of millions being spent and this is a recap of the main transfers that occurred in the Premier League and the other major transfers.
PREMIER LEAGUE
The Premier League has seen more spending on transfers this window than all of Europe's other Top 5 leagues combined so it is no surprise that almost all major transfers this window were to Premier League teams. The Premier League teams spent over 800 million pounds on transfers this season, with Chelsea contributing to 37% of that figure
Enzo Fernandez - Chelsea
Chelsea has had an extremely busy and expensive transfer window. Todd Boehly has made his mark by spending more in this transfer window than every club in the top European leagues combined at a combined total exceeding 300 million pounds. The best young player at the world cup Enzo Fernandez was guaranteed to go to a big team after the tournament. In last-minute fashion, Chelsea signed the young star for 106 million pounds, making him the most expensive Premier League player ever.
Mykhailo Mudryk - Chelsea
Another one of the most expensive premier league players ever, Mudryka cost the club 100 million pounds. He was all set to go to Arsenal however Arsenal wasn’t willing to meet Chelsea’s bid. The Ukrainian had 17 G/A in 19 matches for Shakhtar Donetsk across all competitions. He made his debut for the blues at Anfield and showed great potential.
Joao Felix - Chelsea
The Portuguese superstar is sought after by many clubs with the likes of Arsenal and Man Utd competing for his signature. But ultimately he is another on the evergrowing list of Chelsea transfers. He’s been signed on loan from Atletico Madrid until the end of the season, for under 10m pounds. And although he had a great start against Fulham, he was sent off in the 58th minute after a poor challenge. He was then handed a 3-match suspension.
Leandro Trossard - Arsenal
The red-hot gunners managed to sign the Brighton attacker for 27m pounds, they’ve paid an initial fee of 20m but with add-ons, the deal could reach 27m. The 28-year-old has been in the form of his life for Brighton this season with 9 G/A in 16 matches. He’s signed a 4 and half year deal with an option for another year. Arsenal moved for the player after missing out on Mudryk who went to Chelsea. Trossard has played 2 matches for his new team and he’s looked promising so far.
Jorginho - Arsenal
The serial winner Jorginho is still playing in London, but not in West London anymore. In probably one of the most unexpected moves of this transfer window, Jorginho becomes one of the many players to play for both London rivals joining Cesc Fabregas, Ashley Cole, and others.
Cody Gakpo - Liverpool
After an impressive performance in Qatar, the Dutch player was scouted by several big teams. Man Utd was the one rumored to have been hoping to sign him. Liverpool wasn’t planning on signing a forward, however with Jota and Diaz injured they were out of options. They signed Gakpo for $45M, the striker has 9 goals and 12 assists this season for PSV which is the most of any other player in the Eredivisie.
Wout Weghorst - Man Utd
The Dutch striker has been signed from Burnley on loan until the end of the season, with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the club this is a move that makes sense. Weghorst is a natural striker and showed his talent during the defeat to Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup where he got 2 late goals. United will pay Burnley 2.6m pounds, and there is no option or obligation to buy at the end of the loan. The 30-year-old seems to be a good fit for Ten Hag’s team, he has had some excellent performances and got his first goal for the club in a 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest.
Anthony Gordon - Newcastle United
Newcastle has been amazing this season and they have shocked everyone with their great defense and unbelievable chemistry. To add to their midfield, they have signed the young English winger from Everton for 45 million pounds, a move several pundits have criticized like Jamie Carragher. We will have to wait if this move was worth the price tag.
Keylor Navas - Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest had a crazy transfer window, signing 29 players over the month. Their biggest transfer would have to be Keylor Navas, the three-time Champions League Winner who has now moved from PSG.
Major Transfers in other leagues
Cristiano Ronaldo - Al Nassr
After conquering Europe, winning almost every trophy there is to be won in European football with the best teams on the continent, Ronaldo is ready to conquer Asia. His move was most likely prompted by the 200 million dollar salary, making him the highest-paid footballer in the world by almost double the second highest, Kylian Mbappe. This move has attracted much more followers to the Asian aspect of the game and has brought Saudi to the global football stage.
Joao Cancelo - Bayern Munich
A big surprise to many, Joao Cancelo was loaned to Bayern until the end of the season, Bayern does however have the option to buy at the end of the loan for 70m euros. With the German club facing problems at right back due to injuries to Lucas Hernandez and Noussair Mazraoui, Cancelo could be the perfect replacement. The 28-year-old has seen limited playing time recently and this may be the driving factor behind his loan.
